Prof. Nigel Titchener-Hooker (Director of the Faculty of Engineering, University College London and Academician of the Royal Academy of Engineering) and Zhang Wensheng (Chief Expert of Key Laboratory of Cement Base Material Science) specially appointed by Yao Yan (President of China Building Materials Academy) jointly unveiled the lab. Dr. Bai Yun (Director of Center for Advanced Materials and Innovative Materials (AIM), University of London) presided over the unveiling cerement. Lei Fengyun (General Representative of Representative Office, China Association for International Exchange of Personnel in UK), Kuang Jianjiang (First Secretary of Education Sector, Chinese Embassy in UK), M. Tyrer (Representative Senior Expert of UK Cement and Concrete Industry) Raman Mangabhai (vice President of UK Concrete Technology Research Institute), and other 80 college and institute scholars from UK, China and Thailand attended the unveiling cerement.

Academician Nigel Titchener-Hooker spoke highly on the establishment of the joint laboratory and he thought the establishment of joint laboratory could give full play to the advantages of the two units, further promoted cooperation and talent cultivation in the field of advanced building materials and jointly led the low-carbon development of building materials.

UK-China Joint Laboratory of Advanced Building Materials was an important consensus reached in 2015 when Yao Yan's delegation visited University College London. Main purpose for establishing the laboratory was to strengthen the UK-China exchanges and cooperation in the field of advanced building materials and personnel training. Successful establishment of UK-China Joint Laboratory marks a major step was forwarded for the international strategy of China Building Materials Academy.

After the unveiling ceremony, Innovation in Low-carbon Cement and Concrete Technology jointly hosted by China Building Materials Academy and University College London was successfully held in University College London. The Innovation was co-funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China and British Council. As the co-host unit of the Innovation, 6 young scientists in low-carbon cement and concrete appointed by China Building Materials Academy have attended the Innovation.
