A Good Builder Who Shoulders Heavy Burdens and Overcomes Various Diffculties

Yang Bingfeng

Joined CNBM in July 2002

The Director of Engineering Management Department No.2 of CDI and the Project Manager of PCC 7700TPD Clinker Cement Production Line and Captive WHR and 24MW Coal Power Plant Project undertaken by CDI in Pakistan

At 1:23 a.m. on September 16 2020, Yang Bingfeng, the project manager of Pakistan PCC cement production line (hereinafter referred to as the "PCC project") with a daily output of 7,700 tons of Chengdu Design Research Institute of Building Materials Industry Co., Ltd., posted a message: "Running at 3,000RPM succeeded! All of you have worked hard and I am proud of you!" He can't remember how many times he worked late into the night. Every progress in the project construction is telling his persistence and responsibility.

The PCC project with a daily output of 7,700 tons of clinker cement production line is the first EPC project of Chengdu Design Research Institute of Building Materials Industry Co., Ltd. in Pakistan, including supporting 12MW waste heat power generation and a 2x12MW coal-fired power station. The high-quality and efficient performance of the project has established a good corporate image in the local area. Every deep footprint of project construction is a mark of the hard work forging ahead.

In April 2019, when the installation of machinery and equipment for the project was drawing to a close and no-load commissioning was scheduled to begin, the construction of the steel comprehensive corridor of the whole plant was delayed due to the postponed arrival of personnel as a consequence of the air war between India and Pakistan. On this steel corridor laid the main cables to each electrical room, water and compressed air pipes to each workshop, steam pipes for waste heat generation and control fibers linking the central control to each electrical room. Only with completion of this corridor could the commissioning of the whole plant be commenced. In order to open this artery in the shortest possible time, Yang Bingfeng organized teams to work 8 hours per shift and 3 shifts per day to have the overhead corridor paired and hoisted within 20 days instead of the usual 2 to 3 months!

The cement production line was successfully started on January 15, 2020. The first ton of qualified clinker was successfully produced on January 21. The first ton of qualified cement was successfully produced on January 27. The first-class project management ability shown by Yang Bingfeng and his team has won the full recognition of the owner.

The PCC project was commissioned at the beginning of the global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. All European equipment service engineers at the site were evacuated. Pakistan completely shut down all commercial flights, which  made it impossible for the project that was in the pre-assessment production line commissioning stage to obtain external support, and the project was stagnant. However, Yang Bingfeng led the project team to focus on pandemic prevention and control together with commissioning, and solved the difficulties and problems one by one.

It is by relying on the spirit of "Never Give up Easily" that the Project Department completed all the performance assessments of the cement clinker line and packaging plant within three months.

The installation and commissioning of the power plant supporting the project were also stopped due to the unavailability of the manufacturer's service personnel. Installation and commissioning of the power plant was a new challenge for the project department.

Steam turbine, as the heart of power plants, required high equipment operation accuracy and complex interlocking. Wrong parameters or unreasonable interlock setting may well cause irreparable damage to the equipment. Yang Bingfeng quickly organized the professional and technical personnel related to the electrical and mechanical discipline of the project to set up an attack team. Everyone studied the equipment instructions and drawings, consulted various relevant materials, and connected with the manufacturer's personnel by video to guide and solve problems online. After more than half month’s efforts, parameter setting and interlock testing of the steam turbine has been successfully completed. Finally, the steam turbine was successfully impulse-started. The project was located at the foot of the mine mountain range. In September 2020,the project site experienced a once-in-a-century torrential rainfall, and the road in the plant was waterlogged up to half a meter. Yang Bingfeng actively discussed with the owner to find a solution. On one hand, temporary flood interception ditches were excavated outside the plant to drain the water, and the gaps in the plant wall were blocked in time to avoid more floods entering the plant area. On the other hand, temporary drainage ditches were excavated in the plant to eliminate waterlogging. After our joint efforts, despite the torrential rain and the flooding outside the plant, the project site was still rumbling with the sound of machines and cheerful operation of equipment.

In his spare time, Yang Bingfeng set up the project basketball team and table tennis team, opened a gymnasium, organized fun games and karaoke competitions to enrich everyone's spare time, and created a "home" atmosphere for overseas employees. In order to help external engineers and local employees integrate into the team, he also actively invited them to participate in activities to enhance the cohesion and centripetal force of the department.

September is an autumn month in Pakistan. In a rare moment of leisure, Yang Bingfeng, who has not returned to China for 11 months, imagined this scene in his mind: after the completion of the project,he would personally record a video of the project panorama and production, so that his wife and daughter who have been silently supporting his work could see it and could feel his pride of being abuilder of this project!

Driven by Mission and Passion,

Traversing EveryCorner of The World

Shen Mianxin

Joined CNBM in July 2007

The deputy director of the engineering department of HCRDI Engineering Design Company

As China’s "Belt and Road" Initiative gains momentum, infrastructure development in countries along the route has experienced a remarkable surge. If construction materials are likened to the "nourishment" of infrastructure projects, then those working in the building materials industry are the vanguards of the "Belt and Road"Initiative expeditionary forces. Shen Mianxin of SINOMA International Hefei Cement Research & Design Institute Corporation Ltd. embarks on a new voyage within the framework of the "Belt and Road" Initiative, carrying the noble mission of the building materials industry.

In March 2013, right after completing the Xinjiang project, Shen Mianxin couldn't savor the joy of his daughter's birth. Instead, he immediately immersed himself in the demanding 5,000tpd project in Indonesia, without pausing for a moment.

Situated in the tropical region, Indonesia poses various challenges with its numerous islands, thorny terrain, venomous snakes, and persistent mosquitoes. However, these environmental difficulties are far less serious than geologic problems. His primary concern was tackling the complex geological conditions, which presented the foremost technical obstacle. The project site was in close proximity to a river, and the rock layers exhibited intricate and unpredictable variations even only a few meters apart. Understanding the criticality of selecting an appropriate foundation treatment plan, he dedicated himself to the task. Living and dining with the geological exploration team,he toiled day and night, meticulously examining exploration records, conducting core sampling, and performing analytical experiments. His commitment remained unwavering despite enduring harsh weather conditions and physical exhaustion. After acquiring accurate ground investigation reports,he promptly engaged Chinese experts to assess the findings and devise a suitable foundation treatment plan tailored to the local conditions. For the clinker warehouse, a gravel mattress bedding layer combined with pile foundations was adopted, while the cement warehouse utilized plain concrete to replace the soil between piles, maximizing cost savings for the project. Additionally, he provided substantial factual evidence to support his case for compensation of the foundation treatment costs, engaging in open and transparent communication with the owner. After thorough negotiations, the owner agreed to compensate nearly USD 1.5 million.

In 2021, he assumed the dual roles of Site Manager for the technology center project and Project Manager for the Wolong Zhonglian Commercial Mix project, effectively managing multiple responsibilities simultaneously.

In late March, the signing of the Pakistan ASKARI 6,500t/d clinker cement production line and its supporting projects presented a unique opportunity. The project's construction period of 16 months,  especially in the context of the ongoing new crown epidemic, posed significant challenges.Nevertheless, he embraced the opportunity with unwavering determination and willingly took on the role of project manager, undeterred by the anticipated difficulties.

The contract marked the initiation of the battle, and he wasted no time in delving into the intricacies of design and procurement as soon as the project commenced. Amidst the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous interactions were confined to online platforms, significantly impeding efficiency, particularly in addressing critical details.Nonetheless, he exhibited unwavering patience and perseverance, engaging in continuous communication. Serving as a trailblazer, he led his team by example, consistently working overtime day after day to secure as much time as possible for on-site construction.

Throughout the project, he demonstrated unwavering dedication, often sacrificing sleep, waking up early, and spending most of his time in the central control room. Under his leadership, the entire team pressed forward with the determination to overcome all obstacles, firmly believing in their ability to succeed without surrendering, and adopting a proactive approach of forging a path through every mountain and building bridges over every waterway. This unwavering spirit ultimately led them to achieve a resounding victory.

On October 27, as the project was officially commissioned and put into operation, an overwhelming wave of excitement swept through the owner's team, leaving many of them moved to tears and hailing the project department for "creating miracles".

Despite being frequently separated from his family and unable to provide definitive answers to his children's inquiries about his return, he firmly believes that his career is a meaningful contribution to the development of the "Belt and Road" Initiative projects and the betterment of the communities along the route. The thought of serving the construction of "Belt and Road" Initiative, improving the livelihoods of people in the countries involved, and promoting the internationalization of Chinese cement equipment fills him with immense pride and satisfaction.
